Should You Add a User to Your Credit Card?

If you are a credit card holder you have likely considered at one time or another about adding an additional cardholder to your account. It really is a quick and simple process all you need to do is contact your credit card company by phone or filling out a quick online form on the company’s website.

Wait just a minute before you decide to add an additional cardholder to your credit card account. While it is a simple process to add an additional cardholder it can open up a whole new realm of responsibilities with the care of your account. You as the primary cardholder can be held responsible for not only the charges that you have made but the charges that the secondary cardholder has made as well. This is why you need to take the time to carefully consider if you are able to handle having an additional cardholder on your credit card account.

When selecting an additional cardholder on your credit card account you need to choose someone that you trust. Ok this sounds completely obvious but it can be super easy to decide to add someone to your credit card account only to find out that it was a horrible idea.

Unless this is a person that you completely trust you should never add someone to your credit card account other then immediate family members. There have been too many instances where dealing with money has caused the ruin of many relationships. It can be great to have a close friend or family member on your account until of course they make a charge that they cannot immediately cover. You can completely avoid the stressful situation that this will cause by avoiding it altogether.

Always keep in mind the legal responsibilities that are involved with adding an additional cardholder to your account. You are responsible for all the charges that that make no matter if you approved of them or not. So before you take that leap make sure that you are completely certain about all the legalities that are involved.

Do not add your children to your credit card account unless you are fully prepared to end up paying for irresponsible purchasing choices. You would be foolish to think that a young adult would be in a position to immediately take the responsibilities of credit card usage seriously right away. It will take some time for them to get the in’s and out’s of being smart with credit card purchases.

Consider the reasons as to why you would want to add someone onto your credit card account. Are they unable to get a credit card of their own due to poor spending habits. If this is the case this should throw up a huge red flag when it comes to adding this particular person onto your credit card account.

You need to carefully consider all the reasons that you would or would not want to add an additional cardholder to your credit card account. While it would be a great help to your secondary cardholder you need to make sure that your credit as the primary cardholder is properly protected.
